Inspired by Bali. Its culture & people. Its complex layers of existence. Its intensity. Its serenity. Its modern-day, fast paced, hectic side life and its sacred, timeless essence.

The Story

When Band of Frequencies headed to Bali in Feb 2017 to launch our "Men of Wood & Foam" soundtrack and screen the historical surf doco at the Deus Temple of Enthusiasm, we had no idea we were going to end up writing & recording a new track as well as making a psychedelic film clip with filmmaker Nathan Myers ("Here & Now", "Se7en Signs", "Innersection").

Loose plans were made before the trip to hit the studio, but things took a welcome twist when we found ourselves getting amongst it with a talented crew of like-minded creatives. Nathan had a new 360 camera and was keen to shoot a clip to check out what it could do. It was wet season and the waves were pretty average, so we had more time on land and indoors to focus on creative ideas. We played a run of gigs with the new line up of Adam 'Bam Bam' Felton and Leeroy Cummings trading places on drum kit and percussion. It felt epic with two drummers, plus the whole feel of Bali and it's people just reminded us of everything I love about that place, so we were felt inspired to create something from the experience.

We had just one day in the Seminyak Pro Studio booked, but rather than record a previously written track, we threw ourselves into the unknown. And this whole new tune emerged. "Becik Becik," the original title and chorus, means "very busy" which was the vibe of the island and our trip. Busy busy in a good good way.

The high energy 6/8 groove idea came about first, so we worked on that while our local sound engineer Gun, pulled sounds from the island ether. We added a half time dub influenced section in the middle, giving the tune a spaciousness which inspired multiple layers of existence. The intensity and the serenity. The modern, fast-paced, hectic side of Bali life contrasting the sacred, timeless essence of the island, its deeply spiritual people and ancient culture.

Following a flurry of final shows, we returned home with the files and hit the new Yama-Nui studios with PaulieB ‘Lord Tanuki’ to mix it down and give it the Tanuki Dub treatment. Meanwhile, Nathan Myers was editing a crazy psychedelic film clip that we hadn't seen yet and could only imagine.

What a journey. We're stoked with how it all came together, from writing and recording a new tune in the studio to filming the film clip all within a few days. The process and the result feel super fresh and inspired, which is now informing a new album currently in the works. Many thanks to all involved in "Making it Happen".

"There are plenty of accomplished musicians out there.
